2020 Marine Descombe Beaujolais-Villages

Hrmm. OK, so I tried this in its 2018(?) edition, and it was weird. I didn't expect 2 years to make an actual difference, but it really did. I guess that's wine for ya! This time around, it tasted sweet, like sweet concord grape juice. It was odd, and not what I was expecting, given the dank dirty taste of the older one! Definitely better in 2020, unlike literally everything else.

I also made a turkey meal with this (though not an entire smoked turkey), and that was nice too.

2019 Jacqueline Delaunay Muscadet Sèvre et Maine "Sur Lie"

Another Mary T! This is truly the autumn of Mary Taylor wines for me. A comforting experience. This is a rare MT white though, which was fun. It was definitely on the tart side, but not undrinkable. I enjoyed it, though I'm not able to oyster it up as recommended.

2017 Odile Delpon Cahors

I think I might be having too much wine these days -- I got a lil redfaced and dizzy tonight after drinking this one! I've been lucky to have so many nut-free Mary Taylors to enjoy. This is another new one, although it's a Malbec, so nothing too zany. I enjoyed it; my first instinct was that it was a little gamey(!) but it faded quickly and became kind of "generic red" -- not too thick or thin or acidic or anything off base. Not super fruity either, but that's OK. It held up for 3 pretty solid similar days. Sadly, no bean soup for me, but I do like soup in winter and I bet that'd go with this nicely.

2017 Christophe Avi Buzet

Another Mary Taylor pick! You love to see it. This is a mix of Merlot and CabSav, aka 2 classic reds, so it's no surprise that it basically tastes like... a classic red. I do like that it's not sugary, as the prose mentions. A little bit of those winter red fruit vibes, which is appropriate for the season. When cold, it got a little 'thicker' in mouthfeelings, but overall not too different and not too degraded. An enjoyable, warm red.

I paired this with the recommended Coffee-Rubbed Cheeseburgers with Texas Barbecue Sauce (see picture - so many burgers and meats with these wines! where's the CAKES and NOODLE? :p), and it was a little bit labor intensive for the end of October (school's getting to me), but tasted good, and was a good pairing. All good news here.

2018 Pedro Mittelbrunn Castilla y León

Ah, wine, my old friend. This was a solid red, I never heard of the grape before but it basically tasted like a good, canonical red wine. Not too acidic or thick or weird in any way. And of course, nut free! The cork was also a weird plasticy deal, which I liked -- super easy to remove and didn't flake into the wine. A nice wine without any frills.

2018 Marine Descombe Beaujolais-Villages

Ah, Mary Taylor! My wine-finding queen who says there are no nuts! This was a gamay, and unfortunately, it was a little bit gamEy for my taste. Or, something was weird about it, anyway. My first instinct was that it was oddly thick, almost creamy, which seems fine enough. But it also tasted peppery! Or did I have a dirty cup, I wondered. Nevertheless, it had a weird mouthfeel and a weird aftertaste -- almost onion-beer-breath-y. Do I dare say I like it? At first I wasn't sure, but on cold-next-day drinking, it made me feel even worse, and not want to finish the bottle, which is very very rare for me. I poured the last cup down the sink. I'm sorry, Mary T! This wine was not for me, though I can't even say exactly why.

2019 Maria Cruz Garcia Navarra Red

Ah, you'd think it would be difficult to find nut info on a random Spanish wine (which is almost always true), but this, my friends, is from the Mary Taylor collection, and I heard the good word from the woman herself that none of her wines contain nuts. So I dug in joyfully to this Tempranillo, which was pleasant. I thought it was a solid red -- it definitely has the "grip" to it, you know? Stickiness? Body? Whatever the winos say. But it wasn't super acidic. Not super fruity either, although of course the usual flavors of grape and maybe a light cherry/wood vibe. Overall pleasant both warm and cold, but didn't give me the deep nostalgia of some other reds. Definitely drinkable though!
