Fresh Express Shreds Iceberg

Fresh Express shreds iceberg? Katilina shreds dreams!

These guys have been the target of many a recall, and nowadays your bagged fresh lettuce is one of the last things you want to eat for public health. But I recently discovered through a series of neurotic testing that fresh iceberg doesn't give me any OAS symptoms, so I made a nice little ground turkey burger bowl with this. Perhaps I will get E.Coli, but that's towards the bottom of my health worries (at least until I get it), so I enjoyed some nice uncooked produce in the form of this ostensibly pre-washed lettuce. I will say, it doesn't hurt to rinse it yourself anyway. But I digress. This was reasonably fresh/crunchy, with just a few reddish old bits the day after opening. It's about 5 cups worth, which is a good amount for 2-3 days worth of lettuce-containing foods. This was also the only Plain Bagged Iceberg at my store, so they're shreadsing at the lettuce monopoly too.

Bowery Baby Romaine

Another classic from Bowery! I like the idea of Romaine, it's healthier than iceberg and not mysterious, but this particular instantiation was a little bit "earthy" for me. Maybe they're all like that! Still, good concept, good amount for one salad, etc. It'd be cool if the pieces were a little smaller (I know I can tear 'em myself, and I do, but I'm just saying. If wishes were horses.)

Bowery Crispy Leaf Lettuce

Don't get me wrong, I like the design and easy-to-eatness of all the Bowery lettuce packages, but of those, this is one of my least favorites. It tasted pretty "earthy", if you know what I mean. I know there's no dirt on it, it looks clean, yet it tastes like there might be some dirt on it. The frilly leafs aren't for me, I guess! Still ate it though.

Bowery Spring Mix

I was lucky, my spring mix was free of those purple bits. It was basically generic salad greens, which I like very well. Plus, no need to wash, and I can eat out of the container? Very nice. I added a hard boiled egg and some dressing and it was a very satisfying little meal. Thanks Bowery! (I always think of being a teenager listening to the Decemberists while showering when I see the word "Bowery", anyone else? Hm? No?)

Bowery Baby Butter Lettuce

I like all pre-washed lettuce. Actually, I don't know if this is pre-washed, but it says "no need to wash", which is the same thing in my book. I did have a few wilty pieces and a few bug-holey pieces, but for the most part it was crispy and fresh. A good single-serve salad size container, too.

fresh2o Red Leaf Lettuce

OK, I didn't have exactly this packaging, but indeed it is a hydroponic lettuce tuft, with roots attached, smooshed in a bag. Seems cool, except I'm not buying lettuce to deal with Dirt and Such -- I can grow my own Dirt Lettuce!! So this was not an ideal experience. The taste was OK. Maybe a bit earthy (and yes I did wash it). I prefer a pre-washed style, alas.

Bright Farms Sunny Crunch Iceberg Lettuce

Mine was actually grown in PA! I like the cute little locale label. I also like that this says "no need to wash", and that it is packaged in its own closed-case, because I am anxious about not just allergens but also Dirt and Bug. Yes, I am a precious babby. Anyway, I enjoy this lettuce -- it tastes like lettuce, and I've had no issues with it. Makes one biiig salad. Very nice.
